Biographie :
Carpathian Forest est un groupe de black metal norvégien formé en 1992 par Lord Nosferatu (vocaliste/guitariste/claviériste), Lord Karnstein (guitariste/claviériste/vocaliste), Damnatus (bassiste) et Lord Blackmangler (batteur).
Les membres se mettent immédiatement à l'oeuvre avec le désormais légendaire démo Bloodlust and Perversion, un mélange de black metal primitif et aggressif. Damnatus et Lord Blackmangler sont éventuellement remplacés par le bassiste John Martin Harr et le batteur Svein H. Kleppe. Lord Nosferatu change alors de pseudonyme pour R. Nattefrost et Lord Karnstein devient J. Nordavind.
En 1993, le groupe expérimente avec des hymnes et lamentations symphoniques et enregistre Journey through the Cold Moors of Svarttjern.
En 1994, Carpathian Forest enregistre le mcd Through Chasms, Caves and Titan Woods, qui comprends en outre la chanson thème de Journey through the Cold Moors of Svarttjern. Le lancement de cet album se fait l'année suivante lorsque Haarr et Kleppe quittent le groupe pour Sea Of Dreams.
En 1998, Carpathian Forest s'associe au producteur Terje Refnes et enregistre Black Shining Leather avec le batteur Lazare (vrai nom Lars Are Nedland). L'album obtient alors du succès auprès de la scène undreground. Carpathian Forest recrute ensuite le bassiste Tchort (vrai nom Terje Vik Schei) et Lazare. Cette année Nattefrost joue avec World Destroyer pour faire diversion. Lazare est éventuellement remplacé par Anders Kobro.
En 1999, Carpathian Forest enregistre Strange Old Brew, avec artistes invités Nina Hex (vocaliste), Arvid Thorsen (saxophoniste) et E. Kulde (back vocals). Strange Old Brew est lancé en 2000. Plus tard cette année, le groupe enregistre Morbid Fascination of Death, avec artistes invités C. Alucard (narrateur), Nina Hex, Mötorsen (saxophone) et E. Kulde (back vocals). Nordavind quitte alors Carpathian Forest, mais le groupe continue avec le bassiste/claviériste Vrangsinn (de World Destroyer) et Tchort s'occupe de la guitare. Morbid Fascination of Death sort en 2001.
En 2003, le groupe lance Defending the Throne of Evil.
